For many the decision to have bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is met with both trepidation and relief. If you’ve struggled with weight loss for a very long time and nothing has worked it comes as a relief to know that you will finally see results. Bariatric surgery achieves weight loss by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve Gastrectomy) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery) which is where most people’s trepidation comes in.  
 
We hope we can relieve some of that trepidation as well. Our staff, surgeons and post-op support groups are unparalleled in their success and care. As a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® (BSCOE) our complication rate is lower than the national average. Long-term studies show bariatric surgery causes significant long-term loss of weight, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a reduction in mortality of 23% from 40% source: N Engl J Med 2009; 361:520-521, not to mention numerous other benefits.
 
If you have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40 or a BMI of 35 with coexisting medical conditions such as diabetes the U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends bariatric surgery. Research is also emerging that suggests bariatric surgery could be appropriate for individuals with a BMI of 35 to 40 with no coexisting medical conditions or a BMI of 30 to 35 with significant coexisting medical conditions.
