Scripps Mercy busiest in weight loss surgeries

When Jennie Stewart had weight-loss surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego last month, she didn’t go there because the hospital does the most bariatric surgeries in the state.

She went to Scripps Mercy because that’s where Kaiser Permanente sent her.

Pacific Bariatric Performs 15,000th Procedure

This milestone has been reached by only a handful of bariatric surgery programs in the world.

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 17, 2011 - Surgeons at Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group (PBSMG) and Scripps Mercy Hospital recently performed their 15,000th bariatric surgical procedure. This milestone has been reached by only a handful of bariatric surgery programs in the world.

Low-Carb Diets No More Effective for Long-Term Weight Loss

SAN DIEGO – The popularity of low- or no-carb diets is holding strong, but new evidence suggests that this common dieting method is no more effective for weight loss than simple calorie counting.

Carbohydrates, such as bread, potatoes, cereal and pasta, have been cited in the past as a source of weight gain and as a result have been banned from many popular diet plans. Recent studies have determined that there is no significant weight-loss difference between people who eat carbohydrates and those who do not.

Life After Bariatric Surgery Surgery

SAN DIEGO – Studies are proving that dieting is often only a temporary stop on the path to weight loss. Most recently, studies have shown that after losing weight, people often relapse into old habits, including poor diet and little or no exercise.

Physicians have long known that a complete lifestyle change is the only long-lasting solution to obesity. Most people struggle to break the habits that led to weight gain, which often takes place over the course of many years.

Weight Loss Patients Often Battle Addiction

SAN DIEGO – Food addictions often fuel rapid weight gain. Many individuals find great comfort in food and the social aspects of eating. But for some, this addiction proves too powerful, and their health begins to suffer the results of extreme obesity.

Number of Obese Growing Nationwide

SAN DIEGO – A recent study indicates that the number of people who are morbidly obese – at least 100 pounds overweight or a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher – is 50 percent higher now that in past years.

More Teens Turning to Weight Loss Surgery

SAN DIEGO – A new study indicates that an increasing number of teenagers are turning to bariatric surgery to lose weight, as well as regain their health and quality of life.

The results also indicate that the adolescents who were part of the study experienced fewer complications and spent less time in the hospital after surgery. However, any possible long-term complications from the procedure on younger adults and children are not yet fully known.

Exercise or Diet Both Effective for Weight Loss

SAN DIEGO – Recent studies have indicated that exercise and diet are equally effective at helping people to lose weight. Whether through exercise or a restricted diet, weight loss for some individuals is essential to the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other weight-related health conditions.
